Standard Course:

The Horticulture and Parks & Gardens Unit courses are developed to be conducted self paced e-learning with practical activities to be signed off by your trainer/supervisor and assessor. The time to complete a unit of competency is within three months. The duration may be dependent upon participant dedication and employer facilitation.

Examples of some practical evidence could include (differs for every unit):

  • Completed third-party report
  • Workplace records
  • Lists, photos and videos
  • Workplace policies and procedures they might have to use
  • SDS and labels of materials etc

Overview of Horticulture and Agriculture Individual Units:

This Program includes the theoretical and practical components of individual units of competency chosen by industry to meet the skills and knowledge required to be able to be a competent and safe worker in the horticulture, biosecurity and agriculture industry. The need to do individual units is to ensure employers comply with their duty of care when it comes to certain job tasks and satisfies any contractual arrangements they need to abide by.

Individual units can be selected from the Certificate II Horticulture and Certificate III in Parks and Gardens list of units available on this website. Units high in demand at the moment are:

AHCMOM203 Operate basic machinery and equipment

This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to operate and maintain machinery and equipment. This unit could apply to everyday machinery and equipment used in Parks and Gardens maintenance like lawnmowers, ride-on mowers, brush cutters, whipper snipers, blowers, hedge trimmers and others. This unit does not apply to chainsaws, tractors, vehicles, earth moving equipment.

AHCMOM202 Operate tractors – not available at the moment

This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to operate tractors with and without attached equipment. Working with tractors is an inherently dangerous activity. Individuals who work at this level must be thoroughly instructed in all work health and safety aspects of operating tractors. The tractor must also comply with relevant Australian standards for tractors.

AHCPMG201 Treat weeds and AHCCHM201 Apply chemicals under supervision

These units of competency describe the skills and knowledge required to treat weeds and apply chemicals using workplace-specific application equipment under supervision.

AHCWRK209 Participate in environmentally sustainable work practices

This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to follow workplace procedures and instructions and to participate in environmentally sustainable work practices.

AHCBIO203 Inspect and clean machinery for plant, animal and soil material – Weed and Seed course

The unit applies to individuals responsible for the inspection and cleaning of machinery that is being moved from one location to another to ensure that soil-borne pathogens and weeds are not relocated to new sites.

Pre – Requisites:

There are no entry requirements for these courses. However, students should have reasonable fitness and physical ability levels before enrolling in the course.

Units:

Any unit can be chosen from Certificate II Horticulture or Certificate III in Parks and Gardens on this website. Popular examples are listed above.

Outcomes:

Upon completing this course, participants will be issued a ‘Statement of Attainment’ certifying the competence of the unit/s.

Course Delivery of Horticulture and Parks & Gardens Individual Units:

For students who are already employed in the industry:
Your supervisor will play a large part in the practical tasks. Visits by your trainer and assessor will be organised with enrolment.

For students who are not employed and wish to gain employment in the industry:
Regular training and assessment activities will be organised with the student. This could be at a workplace or LT Training’s training facilities with enrolment.

RPL:

LT Training will consider RPL for the units of competency if the applicant can provide sufficient evidence.

Equipment requirements:

Computer with internet access, Adobe Reader and basic Microsoft programs. Other equipment needs will be established with enrolment depending on the unit chosen.

LT Training primarily uses PCYC venues that are non-for-profit and give back to the local community. We run ‘Working at heights‘, ‘Confined space training‘, ‘Operate and maintain chainsaws‘, and ‘ACDC chemical licensing‘ at PCYC’s.
